I had the same Problem with a Realtek onboard sound chip.
The Realtek chip cannot handle high Bitrate with high sample rate while low buffer.
The onboard chip I have can handle 24bit and 48khz with a buffersize of 1536 (Minimum for that is 1056, but it is not chooseable).

I think that you need for 24bit and 96Khz a buffersize beyond 2048.

You can try to disable "Allow Application to take exclusive Control of this device" (Restart Sound Engine after that), and see what happens.

Here a pic that Shows what i mean.

Hmm there is something to it.

I was looking at your screenshot and was playing around with sampling rate.

This was the conclusion. I can get 24bit output to my realtek digital output ONLY if I uncheck both of these as you suggested http://goo.gl/YfChZU and use WDM. (MME won't work in 24bit in any case).
However another strange thing happens then. I can't force it to go 16bit if those two are unchecked.

For example if I set it like this http://goo.gl/cNknq7 and all other output/input cables.
It will still list it as 24bit http://goo.gl/6DYuPK

It will change sampling rate as you can see however it will force 24bit.

Also I could not make 24bit work without sound breaking. Whatever sampling rate I used or whatever buffer I used.

that's true :?
I haven't noticed this, because I never tried to force less than 24bit.

I had Sound breaking (stutter), while i used "DolbyHeadphone" on my soundcard (Asus), respectively Virtual Surround (Realtek).
Try to disable all Post processing effects. Pic

Yeah I always keep "disable all sound effects" checked.

It's not the problem here.
I'll try to investigate if there is something else that could probably cause this...Although I system is pretty clean, and I did test on two separate machines with different components...
