Red X on Windows volume icon

When I choose not to use Voicemeeter as my primary output/input, a red X appears over my volume icon in the system tray. My sound still works and the volume up/down keys work as well, but I can no longer choose an audio source by clicking on the volume icon. I have tried shutting down voicemeeter and uninstalling it as well and the red x is still there. Why is that happening?
