Windows 10: cannot connect to VM as audio device

Post by Boffin »

Hello,

I have been using VoiceMeeter V 1.0.6.0 on an older laptop (Dell Latitude E6240, Windows 10 Pro) without any problems for several years, with several audio applications.

I upgraded to an HP Elitebook 840 G5, also with Windows 10 Pro. I just installed VoiceMeeter V 1.0.8.2. Audio (e.g., from internet browser) works fine to internal & external speakers (via HDMI), but none of my audio applications can connect to that audio via VoiceMeeter:

------- Dell laptop + VM 1.0.6.0 ----------

VM output A1:
WDM Speakers (... audio device)
MME VoiceMeeter Input (VB-Audio VoiceMeeter VAIO)
> MME Speakers (High Definition Audio)
ASIO:ASIO4ALL V2

VM output A2: nothing selected

VBAN is off
MIDI Mapping - nothing defined

Windows Device Manager - audio inputs and outputs:
VoiceMeeter Input (VB-Audio VoiceMeeter VAIO)
MIDI (VB-Audio VoiceMeeter VAIO)
other

Applications use audio source MIDI (VB-Audio VoiceMeeter ...)

NO PROBLEM

------- HP laptop + VM 1.0.8.0 ----------

VM output A1:
WDM Dell S2721SD (2- Sound Intel for display)
WDM Speakers (Connexant ISST audio)
MME Dell S2721SD (2 - sound Intel (r) p...)
> MME Speakers (Connexant ISST audio)

VM output A2: nothing selected

VBAN is off
MIDI Mapping - nothing defined

Windows Device Manager - audio inputs and outputs:
VoiceMeeter Input (VB-Audio VoiceMeeter VAIO)
VoiceMeeter Output (VB-Audio VoiceMeeter VAIO)
other

All my audio applications can see & select VoiceMeeter Output (VB-Audio VoiceMeeter VAIO), but when starting any audio functionality, I get the error "cannot open soundcard", "can't open audio device", "sound card used by other another program".

-------------------------------------------------

HELP PLEASE!!!

Thanks,

Frank

could you post a screenshot of Voicemeeter and its system setting dialog box?

you may check you windows privacy settings regarding microphone and recording devices to be sure that they can be used by any application (including Voicemeeter).

I managed to get things working reasonably well (i.e., my audio apps can now select "VM input" as the signal source).

STEP 1: Win10 --> Start --> Settings --> Microphone --> "microphone access for this device is off" --> "on"

However, for some reason, VM inputs the microphone input - even though NO inputs are selected for Hardware Input 1 and 2. For some reason, VM accesses microphone continuously and I cannot turn it off in VM.

WORKAROUND: in Windows Taskbar, right-click on loudspeaker icon --> Open Volume Mixer --> Mute microphone input.

I still have anther problem: VM does not start up automatically at Windows startup. I have made sure that "Run on Windows startup" is selected in VM Menu. Also, in Windows: Settings --> Startup --> Voicemeeter: ON...

don't understand this, or you have connected your Mic to Voicemeeter hardware input and Voicemeeter will use it 24/7 (then you can use the MUTE button on Voicemeeter directly - but the Microphone is still in use).
or your mic is not connected to Voicemeeter and it is not used at all by Voicemeeter.

uncheck and recheck the option maybe, this is not a usual reported problem.

Well, I have uninstalled VoiceMeeter and installed VB Cable + VB Cable-A + VB Cable-B.

As I mentioned in one of my posts above, I use my Win10 laptop via HDMI with a display that has built-in loudspeakers.

I can only get the display speakers to work, if I make the display the "default device" in the "playback" tab of "Sound" settings. Unfortunately, in this configuration, I cannot make any audio processing application work with one of the VB Cables.

If I make a VB Cable "default device", then I can make my audio app work. However, now there is no more audio via HDMI to my display speakers, nor to the laptop speakers.....

you may have found a simple solution with Voicemeeter.
you must be able to connect any audio device to Voicemeeter, otherwise it means there is a problem.

you may go on our Discord server to find a helper who will check your config
