How to select "Virtual Asio Channels" in Skype etc.?

Post by rkm »

Hey all

first of all, Vincent, thanks a TON for creating this and even more amazingly, making this donationware!
Will definitely support.

I am trying to find out if Voicemeeter can do the following, but I can't wrap my head around this, maybe anyone can help.

Here's the situation - I'm doing recorded interviews for a podcast over Skype/Zoom, and because both usually alter (e.g. distort and compress) the audio of the local (= my) voice recording as well, I wanted to record my voice in parallel locally when doing a session.

To be able to have TWO separate tracks that I can separately level/compress/etc. (one track with two speakers is a mess, especially since my opposite often has very different audio quality than I do), I needed to record myself and the opposite side on TWO tracks.

The way I'm doing this is as follows.

Through a hardware mixer, I'm sending the computer sound to my earphones, and my microphone (that goes through a hardware channel strip for better audio) as a mix-minus to the computer.

In Voicemeeter, I'm sending the microphone hardware input to the virtual (B) output, and the person I'm talking to gets through the "A" virtual input, which is voicemeeter VAIO as my "Standard Audio".

I then use Reaper to record two separate tracks with these settings:

Audio System: Asio
Asio Driver: Voicemeeter Virtual Asio

and then one track is VM-VAIO 1 (= my voice), and the other input is VM-Vaio 7/8 (= computer / the other persons voice).

I have two separate tracks, and I'm happy.

NOW to the actual question (finally, haha!):

- I would love to use the "live effects" capability of reaper to send an FXed version of my voice to the other person (basically noise reduction, bit of EQing, bit of compression).

The problem that I now have is that in Zoom/Skype, I can only select "VoiceMeeter Output (VB-Audio Voicemeeter), but that is the sound going IN to reaper, not the FXed one.

So my hope was that using the Voicemeeter patch bay, I could use Reaper as an insert and somehow get the FXed voice, but this doesn't seem to have any effect or work at all.

For the FXed sound to be captured by Skype/Zoom, I assume I would need to be able to select the an ASIO Output Channel coming out of reaper, but there are no "Asio Channel Virutal Devices" that I can select in Skype/Zoom.

Any idea HOW i could do this?

THanks a ton! :-)

to do that , you need to use Voicemeeter Banana (Voicemeeter sandard does not provide full independent BUS)
then you will be able to assign the incoming Repear Sound to another BUS for SKype

Hi Vincent, thanks for the reply.
I'm actually already using banana.

But in Skype, I can only select "VB-Audio Voicemeeter VAIO" but no specific bus?

VB-Audio Voicemeeter VAIO device provide a playback device (for the voicemeeter virtual input) and a recording device (from the BUS B1). Or do you mean you are missign the AUX VAIO on your system ?

I only have 3 voicemeeter devices:

- Voicemeeter Output (VB-Audio Voicemeeter VAIO) <<<<<<<<<<<< this is what I'm currently using
- Voicemeeter Aux Output (VB-Audio Voicemeeter AUX VAIO)
- Voicemeeter Output (VB-Audio virtual Cable).

You mean, shall I use the virtual cable into Skype?

Please clear things up what you are really doing in Voicemeeter Banana by using the correct names! It also seems to me that you are talking about Voicemeeter (Standard).

I assume that I have finally rebuild rkm's configuration in Voicemeeter Banana:

I guess that he uses Hardware Input 1 for his external channelstrip/microphone.

Voicemeeter Input (VAIO) is connected to computer sounds/the other persons voice.

B1 virtual output uses Composite mode (see Master section)!!!
So all other routing settings inside Banana are irrevelant (especially Hardware Input 1 B1 output switch doesn' t matter if it is on or off).

Inside Banana's system settings/options
Patch Composite uses this configuration:
ch1=IN#1 Left ch2=IN#1 Right
ch7=IN#4 Left ch8=IN#4 Right
other channels are irrelevant (probably set to BUS ch defaults)

This would make perfectly sense in conjunction with rkm's statement that he can record VM-VAIO 1/2 (his voice) and VM-VAIO 7/8 (computer / the other persons voice) inside Reaper on seperate tracks.

This way audio is locked in Reaper.

Some small changes have to be applied to the configuration to enable what rkm wants.

1. In Banana's Master Section set B1 to Normal mode

2. Set B2 to Composite
(keep or enable the setting inside Voicemeeter System settings for
Patch Composite
ch1=IN#1 Left ch2=IN#1 Right
ch7=IN#4 Left ch8=IN#4 Right
other channels are irrelevant (set them to BUS ch defaults))

3. Inside Reaper use Voicemeeter Aux (!) Virtual ASIO!

4. Inside Voicemeeter Banana set Hardware Output A2 to KS: VB-Audio Point or WDM: Cable Input (higher latency/delay).
Don't care about the very different names! It is the same virtual device (actually VB-Audio Virtual Cable)!

In Master Section A2 should use Normal mode!

5. The Output of Reaper should be now visible in Voicemeeter Banana Voicemeeter Aux virtual input!?
Switch A2 Output on!

6. In Zoom/Skype use KS: VB-Audio Point or WDM: Cable Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable) as audio input!

Voila!
